Vistar Commits to Enhanced Safety Standards for Golf Cart Riders in Lake Waccamaw

In response to recent safety regulations mandated by the Town of Lake Waccamaw, Vista commits to enforcing age- and size-appropriate restraint requirements for golf cart passengers under 16 years old within town limits. This initiative, unanimously endorsed by the Lake Waccamaw Town Council upon the recommendation of Police Chief Scott Hyatt, aims to enhance resident safety.
Approved Safety Guidelines
Effective immediately, the updated ordinance specifies the following safety measures:
• Infants and Toddlers: Must be secured in NC Department of Transportation-approved car seats, firmly attached to the golf cart at all times during operation.
• Young Children: Required to use car seats until they are ready to transition to booster seats.
• Booster Seats: Mandatory until children can safely use the vehicle's seat belt alone, generally when they are over 4 feet tall and between 5 to 8 years old.
• Five-Point Safety Harnesses: Acceptable for securing children over 4 years old, ensuring a snug fit to prevent any risk of sliding out.
• Standard Seat Belts: Riders aged 15 and under must use standard seat belts while in the golf cart.
Community Engagement and Safety Advocacy
Chief Hyatt stressed the importance of adhering to these guidelines to prevent accidents and protect young passengers. Residents are encouraged to seek clarification or information by contacting the Lake Waccamaw Police Department directly.
Public Awareness and Education
Responding to concerns regarding potential risks, Chief Hyatt reiterated the necessity of these measures in all situations to ensure safety. He recommended alternative transportation options in situations where risks are heightened, prioritizing child safety.
